Coates cited that he felt it important to have women write women’s voices. And now Coates has recruited writer Roxane Gay, author of Bad Feminist, and poet Yona Harvey to write a brand new series entitled World of Wakanda. And to top it off Black Panther is getting the big screen treatment with a film directed by Ryan Coogler ( Creed, Fruitvale Station) and cast members Lupita Nyong’o and frequent collaborator Michael B. Then there’s Run The Jewels being involved. ![]() ![]() There is of course the obvious reboot of the comics with Ta-Nehisi Coates, a national correspondent at The Atlantic, and author of Between the World and Me, a National Book Award winner, writing the series. That was the environment in which Layla’s story came to me. American Muslims, as ever, were seen as other, a group that continually and consistently was being asked to prove its Americanness, but always falling short because of bigoted standards. There was a public guilting or scapegoating of Muslims as if all Muslims had to bear the onus of the terrible acts committed by a few. After the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, there was a significant uptick in Islamobphobic rhetoric in the United States that spread to changes in policy and an increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes. Her credible first-hand accounts came from traveling to and visiting Turkey often as the wife of a British ambassador (Bohls, 179-205). She is remembered most for her letters that presented Middle Eastern culture in a more enlightened way. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu is one of these few individuals who attempted to accomplish that in her works. This problematic way of viewing the east creates a false narrative that very few people have attempted to take apart. This manner of examining the east is known as Orientalism, a word that Edward Said defines as the “constellation of ideas” that present eastern lands as exotic, and separate from the west (Said). Western perspectives of areas outside of Europe are, more often than not, filtered through a lens of fantasy and imagination. ![]() |
